Retro gamer game reviews database?

Postby ChipTune on Wed Aug 08, 2012 5:23 pm

I have so many issues of RG that it is a real pain to go through every one looking at the game reviews at the back.

Along with IGN I find RG's reviews almost always spot on to my own personal tastes (thank you for having the guts to say Sine Mora isn't actually that good, was so sick of all the 9/10 and high poetic praise poured onto it), so it would be great to have a site where all the reviews that have appeared in the magazine could be located and browsed with ease.

Why not stick them on the site itself? Unlike a lot of other gaming mags, I'd say the reviews section is the least interesting part of RG, where the features and interviews are genuinely entertaining and informative. If it was a concern that someone, somewhere would stop getting the mag just because the reviews are online, have a delay where they're not posted up until the next issue is out or something.

Finding the reviews of new retro style games and updates of known retro franchises the least interesting part of the mag clearly shows us you don't play new games or show any interest in modern games with retro feel then.

I love the reviews, it's what I go to first when the mag arrives, to see if there is anything I may have overlooked, or just to see what the team make of modern 'retro' * games.

*by retro I mean games released now that share the spirit of old games - 2d platformers, snes-era rpg clones, arcade game revamps.. that kind of thing

^ Weird, could have sworn I'd just spent this evening hammering Eschatos and Pink Sweets, which I suck so hard at it's not even funny. Dunno why I still try with that one, but I paid for it, so I'm gonna get my money's worth goddammit.

Certainly not saying their reviews are bad or pointless (found Eden's Aegis thanks to RG), my point was that I can't see from a financial perspective why the RG team couldn't put their reviews up on the site somehow. :)
