HD remakes

Postby SirClive on Tue Jul 24, 2012 10:27 am

What are peoples views on these? I am currently playing through the Ratchet and Clank trilogy and loving getting reacquainted with my fave game series of all time. It lacks a bit of polish in places and offers nothing in the way of extras other than the spit and polish and the 3D option (which works very well).

I do have a few others (Sly Raccoon, Metal Gear Solid, Tomb Raider), but haven't really bothered playing any of those.

I am a big supporter of the HD Remake, what is everyone else's view?

Resi 4 on 360 was awesome. I hadn't played RE4 (GC) for a couple of years and the HD remake really hooked me in. Resi 4 is really quite superb (if you are a fan of course).

The actual game, upgraded to run in HD? Yeah, I can get behind that.
I'm not going to begrudge any Dev wanting another bite at the apple with games they've already sold and profited from before.

I would however like to continue seeing the reduced pricepoints, as they have already profited before.

I like them, especially HD remakes for PS2 games as the PS2 doesn't look that good on my Plasma TV (Even through component). The Sony collections especially are my favourites - God of War, Ico, Sly (I've not tried Jak or Ratchet yet) all look great in HD and didn't feel like rush jobs at all. The upcoming Yakuza HD collection also looks really promising.

Ditto. I'd not played it for a couple of years either and the game hadn't really aged at all. It was still just as fun to play through now as it was at launch. Decent length for a single player game as well, still took me around 20 hours to clear despite playing it through several times before.

A lot of them are 2/3 game compilations for 20-30 quid

so they are all generally reduced price

I'm torn on these. While I like the option of going back to a lot of these games, most of the conversions are dreadful. Resi 4 is a particularly bad example, as all Capcom did was take the original textures and stretch them, thus making the game look extremely washed out. The Devil May Cry games, Prince of Persia, Beyond Good And Evil, Tomb Raider and many others do this as well.

I'm not a big fan of remakes either (Halo, Silent Hill) as they always tend to lose something in the conversion.

I think the best examples are the ones by Bluepoint, but they are remasters, rather than remakes. I liken them to Criterion, who take old films and polish them until they shine. The price point also needs to be lower on a lot of these games.

I've only played Ico so far, and never played the original. The blocky scenery in the intro had me worried it might all look a bit tatty, but once the game gets going it looks great.

Personally I wouldn't want to play RE4 with anything other than the Wii's controls. It's what Gun Survivor should have played like.

If they are done with respect and passion for the original, then I am all for it. I have really enjoyed the Perfect Dark, Guardian Heroes, Spelunky, SWOS, SSFII, and Final Fantasy III (on DS) and Bionic Commando (Rearmed) remakes. But there are others that don't live up to their legacy: Bubble Bobble leaps to mind, and the plentyTony Hawk's HD remake is taking a bit of a battering at the moment.

And if I had a PS3 I would be all over Ico/SotC like an especially virulent rash.

Forgivable due to the awesome nature of the game IMO. It still looked better than the GC version didn't it?

I also loved Code Veronica on the DC but looking at the screenshots for that 360 release? not on your nelly Billy G LOL Looked like they'd used the q*bert engine

I just think that if you're going to charge £15 you should at least make an effort, particularly when the end result isn't better than a superior version (Wii) which is already far cheaper. Interestingly though, they do appear to be giving Okami a proper restoration job.

God of War 1 and 2 (God of War collection) look goddam awesome on the PS3. I'm super glad I never played them before as I feel like I am playing them at their best.

I also think the MGS HD games looks stunning as well.

The first God Of War collection was excellent - I will be buying the MGS set when the price drops a bit (it's still nearly 35 notes on Amazon).

I agree that the HD remasters are a cut above the remakes.

Nah, they did it just right (for fanboy raping purposes) I ran out on the day to buy MS points to run home and buy RE4 then read that there will probably be a disk version that includes CV    I failed at research that day LOL

edit:

I didn't even look at a screenshot   but come on, it's Resi 4!

I'm with Darran. Great idea and can only benefit people as they are often released in packs but they are so often lazy ports.

You can get better results using emulators in most cases.
