Bought the God of War and Splinter Cell ones, they do look a little better though the FMV is of course the same. They should definitely cost no more than £19.99 on release (which some do). They are good value for money but I'd generally rather spend my money on something else tbh.

I've recently liked the HD versions of Oddworld: Stranger's Wrath, and Sly 1 (Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus?), and previously Tomb Raider: Anniversary (had a lot of TR1, I've read), though I hadn't played any of the original versions.

One I've wanted for years (since the PS2 came out), is Metal Gear solid. It's the only game I've ever been really bothered about having in HD. I'm sure Konami hate their fans. First they don't add trophies to MGS4, then they say they will but you'll have to be patient, then they don't bother, then they release HD versions of the games that are already almost HD and leave the original, best, and low-res version alone

Is Stranger's Wrath worth it compared to the original though? I thought the XBox did a pretty good job of it first time round. I can see remakes of PS1, even some early PS2 games to the current generation improving things, but I can't see HD on its own doing much for some of the better stuff from the XBox - maybe if the gameplay itself was overhauled, but just adding some higher-res textures and better explosions doesn't seem to appeal - unless, as Darren says, you missed the original. As I said, the only remakes I've got are because I didn't have a PS2 and particular games are hard to come by second-hand. Which reminds me, where's a PS3 version of Rez?

I always think Stranger's Wrath was under-rated as no-one ever said that there's far more to it than first appears. Either people were too protective of spoiling the twists in the story, or the reviewers at the time couldn't be bothered to play it right through. Still, any chance to play it should be taken.

I love HD remakes, it gives me the chance to trip out on nostalgia without having to suffer from the (now) out-dated graphics.

I have to say the Sony ones (Sly, GOW, etc) are by far the best examples, as is the recently released Metal Gear collection.

More than a few I've found lacking, Price of Persia, DMC and others...but why complain if a company releases a bad product? IF it's that bad, no one will buy it and they'll soon stop it!

Because we are fickle gamers of doom of course.

WHY U NO CHANGE THE GAME? ........ designers change/don't change the game ........ WHY U CHANGE THE GAME?

the above works both ways ad infinitum

I'd rather a no-effort-used Remake than an FPS "Reboot" any day. Just look at Syndicate.
I'd rather tarted up PC code run through a DOS emulator than the game we actually ended up getting.

Because it's a "sure thing."

We know that the game we want remade is a great one, so there's no "worry" about it ending up shitty. Beyond a dreadful port, naturally. A new license has a completely unknown quality, even if it's based on a known license. A "new" Spider-Man game could go any which way, but a HD remake of the original PS1 classic already has my trousers moist from excitement!

It's why Nintendo pump out basically the same games every time. They know it's what we want. Even if we all say otherwise.

I don't see the point of HDing a PS2/Xbox game. Strangers Wrath was very good, I just don't see the point of updating the graphics nominally. What? Am I going to get a HigherHD updates of Resident Evil 5, Killzone 3 and Uncharted 3 all on PS4? Please, don't encourage them, you'll just give them ideas. B**lshit ideas.

I wouldn't mind HD updates of games that benefit from it, Colony Wars, G-Police, Virtua Racer, but they do want to include the original game in there too. Plus there is no hope of this happening anyway. (they ask me every year what games I loved, and the industry swears an oath to make sure the get buried a bit deeper, see The Need for Speed for details)

What I fear is that the games industry is just doing what the movie industry has been doing for a while. Taking a classic movie, giving it to some nobhead who only just learnt to pee without taking his trousers down, he inserts a bunch of teenage playboy bunnies in their mid-thirties into the script, and the film falls on its backside because it has none of the original class or style or edge because, and no surprise, the new guy, even if he saw what made the original a classic, has his own career to think about.

Syndicate seems an apt example.

Remakes are just cynical ripp-offs. I want a game that kicks the butt out of the hardware, and leaves us all bemoaning the 360/PS3s lack of power, not some cheapo remake of a game merely 7 years old that's had the texture-maps run through some ropey filter littered with pointless trophies and some £1.89 DLC

Overall I think remakes are a good thing, if done properly. They also give younger gamers the chance to play classics on current hardware, not everyone has ps2's etc lying around their homes. I would also love to see some of the old mega drive, pce and snes titles given a going over too. In the right hands, games like Castlevania, probotector, the Disney games, the Phantasy Star series etc etc could look fantastic.

I'm starting to think along these lines . . . it (to me) seems like a cop out. Its like the endless remastered CD in the music industry or Directors Cuts of films... how about some new stuff?

And, as you say, does a relatively new game need an HD remake?

I dunno if it's cynical or clever? When I DL'd Resi 4 HD there was a perfectly working gamecube in a box at the bottom of my stairs with Resi 4 in the tray, literally 10 feet from my 360  I knew it was just a HD remake, but I wanted it anyway. I also liked the fact I wouldn't have to set up the GC......ever again (will be going on eBay this week)

A couple of years ago I might have agreed but these days I like more and more 'easy' access to games, maybe 'cos I have kids and limited gaming time? I think there are quite a few HD remakes they could hook me in with.

Keeping the dream alive and letting a new generation enjoy an awesome product. I don't see that as cynical. Releasing a film on Bluray when it is already out on VHS and DVD isn't cynical.
