Match Of The 90s (90s football show) now on YouTube

Postby Andy L on Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:40 am

I've just uploaded the first two in this old BBC series which (to my knowledge) hasn't been available on YouTube before. I suspect a 90s football retrospective soundtracked to music from that era will appeal to a few people on here :)

Season 1989/90
Season 1990/91
Season 1991/92
Season 1993/94
Season 1994/95
Season 1996/97

Thanks for the post, I might check those out.

I seem to remember the international tournaments fairly well, but the domestic stuff is a bit of a blur. Didn't Utd just win everything?

I've always liked football but I first started to follow it properly around World Cup 94. I fell in love with the Italian team of all teams, mostly becuase of the tragic hero that was Roberto Baggio. He became my favourite player and got me into watching Football Italia where I took AC Milan as my second team (after the mighty Liverpool), and Italy as my second international team.

I think it might just be a sign I'm getting old but I think the reason I prefer to play older football games, including games from the early to mid 2000s, is because those games just seem really chock full of incredible players. And now a lot of those old favourites of mine are either retired or well past their best.

Don't get me wrong, we have great players now like Messi, Ronaldo, Rooney, Gerrard, Xavi, Neymar etc, but I think if you compare the teams from then to now, the teams of the past (especially the big international teams) read like list of total legends from top to bottom.

You have excellent taste sir

I have fond memories of Football Italia (with the fantastic James Richardson) too. We never had Sky so it was the only top flight football you could watch on terrestrial TV after the 1991/92 season - plus it was far more glamorous than the English league at the time anyway, with team after team full of incredible players like you say. In fact, it was this vintage upload of Gazzetta Football Italia which inspired me to get off my arse and upload these programmes!

Indeed I do.

I used to love watching Gazzetta, James Richardson was hilarious (still is actually I love listening to him on the Guardian Football Podcast). Always looked forward to the Sunday afternoon match, good times! :D

I must thank you for these uploads, the early 90's was when I first started getting into football as a youngster and can remember all the excitement that was caused by the started of the Premier League, I also recall every kid wanting to be Ryan Giggs when he first broke on the scene, now I feel old

These sound fantastic Andy. Never realised they did a Match of the 90's - will watch later :)

Anyone ever remember a Danny Baker video called 'that was the season that was' around the early 90's? (94 possibly)? A real classic and it was around the time the games were on Sky so it seemed like most of the games were special given how tricky it was to watch them.
