Last night I did some sci fi viewing.

I watched 'Blade Runner : The Final Cut'. I had seen the 'Director's Version' on ITV 1 a couple of years ago. This version looked really crisp(stunning digital conversion). I haven't the original version, so I can't compare it to that. My memory of the 'Director's Cut' is quite hazy as well, so I can't comment on it. What is the RGers preferred version?

I then watched 'THX 1138 : The Director's Cut'. When George Lucas was actually making films about people, instead of milking a cash cow dry! Interesting film. Think '1984' and 'Brazil'. I only have vague memories of the original as well(I think it got shown on Channel 4 some time in the early 1990s).

Well he produced that rather than directed it. Judging by the reviews that it got, it was another dud. I don't think that he is that interested in directing again. A shame as his first two films(THX 1138 and American Graffiti) showed such promise. Then he sort of got sidetracked by how big Star Wars became.

Really? I've heard nothing but positive reviews of Red Tails. Its very much a Lucas production, its been a pet project of his for years.

shogun assassin-bit of a strange one,in super mega wide screen so the viewable picture is tiny and picture quality looks like a bad vhs rip even though it's a genuine dvd.film wise i quite enjoyed it mental as parts of it was, apparently it's two films edited into one and there are four or five sequels.

The reviews that I read said it was sh*t. Great CGI but acting, script, characterisation etc were awful.

Shame as it's a fascinating story. I love WW2 aviation and there are so events that could potentially make great films and use CGI to accurately re create what happened.

Roger Ebert gave it 3 and 1/2 stars and so did James Berardinelli. Total Film and Empire magazine gave it 3 out of 5 stars. Average at best. The same old Lucas-like story - good special effects, cr@p dialogue, mediocre acting and plodding script. In fairness he didn't direct it, but still had a lot of control over the final film.

I think it bombed at the box office. In London, it only seemed to be on in the rep cinemas(problems with distribution - I know that Lucas had to do a lot of the marketing stuff himself).

It is an interesting story, but I think that there was a HBO film done in the mid 1990s, that probably did it a lot better.

Anyway, last night I watched 'The Hill' with Sean Connery. Directed by the late great Sidney Lumet. Not really an anti war film, more of an anti army film. A good performance from Mr. Connery, proving that he could do more than Bond.

At least, one hour fifteen (ok just over an hour due to credits) seems a bit short for a film

I watched 'Moonraker'. Yeah okay, it is cheesey and far from the best Bond film - if you take it for what it is, then it was okay. Plus, Lois Chiles has to be one of the hottest Bond girls. The effects are still pretty good. Plus the classic line : "I think he is attempting re-entry."

I then watched 'Being There' with Peter Sellers and Shirley MacLaine. Unusual film about a retarded Gardner who becomes a celebrity. Apparently, it was a pet project of Sellers, he had wanted to make it for some time. It was his second to last film. It was definitely different - especially the ending(and I am not talking about the outakes).
