Why does the wheelchair make it less amusing? Equal rights and what have you.

I don't know what the fuss is. The 'flame' has lots of backups, so there's always an 'original' source.

Bit of nonsense if you ask me.

But at least they have the "mother flame" well protected in a miner's lamp. We can be thankful for that. Primitive cults of bygone eras had to make do without such technology when they were moving fire around. We've really moved on from those distant times. I'm full of pride here. Britain, we know what to do with a flame. The rest of the world is looking on, green with envy.

We built Stonehenge you know.

A colleague from work is one of the torch bearers next week.

He has had to pay £200 to keep the torch but doubt he will be selling it. There are 8000 of them in total so eventually they won't be worth as much as the early stage ones anyway.

I'll be there taking pictures and he's bringing it to work so we can see it close up. Yes I like pomp and circumstance  .

I'm not interested at all either but I rarely watch TV anymore so I'll be mostly oblivious to the coverage thankfully.

You know it started getting silly when missile launchers being put on roofs were discussed as well as an aircraft carrier in the Thames

Expert analysis of what actually happened...........

Code: Select all
Olympic organisers Locog said it was due to a "malfunctioning burner"..............
It is not uncommon for a flame to go out and this can happen for a number of reasons, for example, in extreme winds

It's the faux mysticism of it all that gets me. That the flame is somehow being passed on from torch to torch, as if the flame is an individual entity. All this talk of the Mother Flame. It's just a PR exercise to obscure the fact we can't produce a torch that can stay lit for such a long journey.

And the cost of all this. What a waste on something so incredibly naff.

Agreed. I can just about accept the games themselves (despite the ridiculous cost of hosting the Olympics and the inevitable disruptions it will cause), but what I really can't stomach is all the BS around it: the torch relay, the ceremonies, the barge on the Thames, the tower that will charge tourists £15 just to walk up it...it's just an endless stream of faff and naff!

Am I just being cynical or is it really just a load of crap?

That's a bit staggering... I'm thinking that it's people who haven't read the description properly, especially on that last one. Like a few years back when people where selling an "Xbox Box", as in, just the cardboard box the Xbox came from.
