Rediscovered retro - now with added Master System!

Postby optimus on Thu Jan 28, 2010 11:09 pm

Evening lads! (I'm guessing that there's not too many ladies around these parts)

Long time reader but first time poster.
Thought I would sign up and get a bit more involved in the retro scene - nice to see its still alive - of sorts.

Bit of background -
About 6 or 7 years ago I was very much into collecting the retro.
Mostly this involved re-buying games from my childhood and a few I never got around to playing or affording as was the case back then.
This was at a time when I was working at a well known computer games shop a couple of years before the BIG retro revival started.
As such I came into contact and posession of some very nice bits and bobs.

Well anyways, back to the post - about 4 years ago I decided that I simply wasn't interested in retro anymore and decided to sell up and invest the money into new hobbies such as collecting music and golf - which is VERY addictive on the equipment side of things.
Around this time I packed some stuff away that I didn't feel right selling or it just wasn't worthwhile selling.

Today I re-discovered that wonderful box!
I had completely forgotten about it.

So this evening I have had the joy of rifling through some games of yesteryear.
This weekend shall see the rise of the Megadrive / Master System / SNES / Dreamcast in the front room - I don't think they will even run on the lcd will they? ha!

Just thought I would share this nice little moment with you.
There are some lovely games in there...

Welcome, lucky you didn't throw all that stuff away! Should all work fine on your LCD but you may be juggling cables for a while!

So I've had a bit of a play around today.
Managed to get the Megadrive up and running on the lcd so enjoyed a bit of Zero Wing!!!
Quality little game.

Here's an example of of what greeted me upon opening up the box:

I plan on going through everything and giving it a proper sort.
Maybe I will document it all here if there is any interest?
Forgot how much stuff was put away! :D

You've got a nice little collection there. Wonder what else is hidden in that box of retro wonders.

What's that big tall SNES game there? Nice box, whatever it is.

That's the box for 三国志英傑伝 (Sangokushi Eiketsuden, roughly Romance of the Three Kingdoms - Legends of the Great Heroes) and according to Wikipedia it's a spin-off of the Romance of the Three Kingdom war simulation games. Originally released for the NEC PC-9801, it was later ported to Macintosh, MS-DOS, Windows, Saturn, Super Famicom and Playstation and got a Gameboy Advance port in 2005. Of course this game was Japan-only.

Well I couldn't've asked for a more subtantial answer.
Cheers Harley :D

Thanks harlequ1n!
I always knew it was a Romance of the Three Kingdoms game but could never pinpoint the sub title.
This was about 4 or 5 years ago mind.

Romance games are bloody hard! Got rid of the ps2 version because of this.
Kept this one for the artwork mainly

And so the adventure continues.

After a nice blast of Zero Wing the other night I continued to sort through this treasure trove.
(technically it was all in the loft and not underground but hey, the name works...)

Stumbled across these two beauties!

I can't begin to think how many hours I once put into House of the Dead 2.
Had the arcade machine up near uni also. That got some hammer.

So is there a trick to getting the Dreamcast gun to work with LCD's? I know that the PS2 ones had issues.
I don't want to get everything unpacked and set up only to find disappointment...

They won't work with TFT, Plasma - anything except a good old fashioned CRT. Even a modern 100Hz CRT will fail. It has to be old school standard def 50/60Hz CRT.

Its the way the tech works, it reads the electron gun scanning across the screen. Other display types don't work like that.

Mine won't even work with my CRT (and that's from 1984!!! - maybe too old - lol)

Anyway, just wanted to add to the WOW on the Chrono Trigger find - you're looking at a £100+ games there mate! Good find! :)
