Antiriad2097 wrote:Very good work, you can see the improvement as you've worked through these. The artwork is much neater on them now and pretty much addresses my main issue, I'm liking how these new ones have turned out.

What are you using for the cab sides etc? Is it balsa or foam or something else? It looks sort of textured on the cut edges.

My only real quibble now, and its a very minor one, is the mismatch on the coin doors. The rest of the cabs are looking good, but the coin door looks like its a paper print stuck on. It might not be so apparent in the flesh but the colours seem off in the photos. In fairness, the cab doors are different on the real cabs, being metal where the cab is wood. But, there's something odd about the colour on the print, its sort of blueish like you get when printing black on white paper, its not quite a deep enough black.

How to address that one is tricky. It may be this is the best solution. But I do wonder if it'd be possible to paint the coin door a metallic black to give it the proper depth and sheen and put a decal over it with the details like the coin slots? Decal paper is available, I looked into it for my bike transfers (that's another thread). Its how the airfix kits always dealt with these things, but I don't know you'd get a solid enough colour if putting it on a black background. You could of course spot the area the decal goes on in white, but then that gets very fiddly so you wouldn't want to be doing that every time. Altenatively, a decal for the dor details (all the ridges and lines in the metal), then overlay that with the standard colour print for the coin slots? I guess there are several approaches of varying difficulty and practicality.

But as I say, a minor quibble. I'm impressed with the progression and results so far.

[edit]
You've just posted the Donkey Kong and it looks much better on that. I guess my issue is with the black on black as its more noticeable on those cabs. The DK looks near perfect.

Thanks again for taking the time to give me detailed feedback .. really appreciate it.

I'm glad you can see a notable advancement in the models. I think they are really coming together nicely now. I invested in a cutting board and scalpel, and i honestly take ages to do the graphics side of it. I figure what is the point is spending 90 minutes to 2 hours building the wooden cabinet and then not investing good time in the final touches.

Im with you on the coin doors. Im not happy with them, and thinking of ways to make them much better. Currently i use a graphic on top of some raised up thin piece of wood to illustrate the door, but i really want to try to use metal of some kind, and really bring the coin door to life, so to speak. I am sure i will nail it down at some point or another.

My obsessive compulisve nature is now in full effect regards my model making. I'm completely focused on getting these better and better, increasing the details, and finding new ways to plus them. :D

Now you mention it, I do wonder if its just the differentiation in colour between the coin door front and sides when you're sticking it on that slab? Perhaps omitting the slab so you just have the two tones for cab body and coin door on the flat wouldn't be so jarring?

As for using metal, not sure how practical that would be, but I don't think its necessary. Real coin doors aren't bare metal, they're painted, powerdercoated or plasticoated, so a lick of paint of the right sheen should suffice.

You realise if you scaled one of these up a bit you could pop a PSOne with an LCD screen in there to play one of the retro compilations. Could be a nice custom piece as a one off to show off your skills.

Funnily enough i bought a PSOne and LCD Screen at the market last week with that very project in mind. I just need to figure out how to detatch the bracket on the screen and re-fix it the other way around, and also sort out how the controls will come together, but yeah, very odd, we are thinking along similar lines here.

I will keep experimenting with the coin doors, and see what looks best. I will post up some comparison shots of different methods for coin doors for some feedback :)

The new one looks much, much better. The edges of the decals look much smoother, and the overall build design looks more pro overall (thats not to say the earlier one wasn't any good, it was. Just a bit rough, thats all). Still want to see a Star Wars Trilogy machine though, preferably a sit-down one :D

re my earlier comments, I do think the 'flat' coin door on the new one looks more authentic than the thicker one, so that does seem to solve the problem I had. The colour variation seems ok as the real thing does vary from cab to door, so my suspicion it was due to the contrast with the face and edges of the door when block mounted seems to hold true. A case where less '3D' detail proves to be more effective.

Now, about that internal lighting... ;)

Totally agree with you regards the " less 3D is more effective " where the coin door in concerned.

When i get back from my holidays i am going to tackle the lighting issue - i have plans in my head for a light and sounds model. Cant wait to get stuck into that. I will have to post a youtube video of it in action once its complete

Thanks again for the feedback

Can you make one that actually works? Maybe nick the innards out of one of those watches or something?

Go on, it'd be a right giggle and would possibly elevate you to the status of "God"
