Once upon a time in america*1984 movie

Postby Fred83 on Wed May 05, 2010 11:14 am

I used to have this on video tape and was happy the day it was given an dvd release,it does often be reshown on digital/fta channels,i like my gangster movies and this would be one my faves along with casino, goodfellas, the godfather, director sergio leone, famous for his westerns took this story based on a book and turned it into a epic movie, robert de niro and james woods have starring roles, the story is based group of childhood friends who growing up into gangsters and run the mean streets, the movie flashes back between the 1920s and the 1960s,each showing a persons place in the history, fantastic musical score along with memorial scenes and backdrop, and the ending which leaves the viewer guessing,so anyone else like this classic?.

Yeah I got this film a couple of years ago on DVD. Because it is so long it comes on two DVDs. It is a very good movie. Both James Woods and Robert De Niro are excellent in it. Someone once called it a "Jewish Godfather". It does get shown on the freeview channel quite a bit - from memory it has been on BBC 4, Film 4, and ITV 4!

Great scene. I also like the scene before the end(it is so haunting). I won't reveal it for people who haven't seen it.

defo, very powerful scene, another scene i liked when flashed back to 1968 and an elderly deniro is sitting in cafe looking at congress man on tv and thinks back when that man on tv was part of a gang.

I really like this film. Bizarrely that the 2DVD set I have splits the film really uncomfortably, with the 'interval' intertitle about 10mins into the second disc. Watch out for that.

That is an awesome film, though I prefer the first childhood half to the rest. It really feels like old new york is real.
