GAME ROOM X360 - THE RG RESURGENCE! JULY 2012

I fired Game Room up the other night after Toxie mentioned it in another thread. I quite enjoyed revisiting the games I played.

I know there were complaints about emulation, but I personally found the emulation, on the games I bought, to be fine. I'm no arcade aficionado though.
I also like the arcade hub and customising each room was one of those gaming activities that I do, I enjoy, but I'm not reeeeally sure why I did notice that there are some new themes and items available so although there are no new games you can at least redecorate!

There are a few games I may still buy, namely Amidar and the two Twinbee games. Same as chiptune, I'll play games on Mame but the addition of online scoreboards is an appealing part of Game Room.

So, who's up for a challenge then? I should have just fired a few out the other night! If a few folk are interested I'd happily buy the games. My tag is Dr Mire Mare.. send me a request chiptune and anyone else that wants to. I have Troma and jd already added.

Ok, so I loaded Game Room up again tonight and decided I'd pay the 240points for Amidar. I guess it's identical to the arcade version, or Mame, and it plays pretty well on the 360 pad.

I think once we started seeing things like Venetian Blinds, it was the beginning of the end.

I still go on occasionally to browse the high scores on Iron Horse, last time I checked, I was in the top 10.

I haven't used Game Room for months. The concept was sound, but the execution was botched beyond belief. A lot of the time, my high scores wouldn't upload properly or leaderboards wouldn't seem to update, some games were emulated poorly (think Iron Horse has no music?), the way you had to download entire 'packs' of games even if you only wanted one of them was silly (Game Room takes up over a gig on my HDD as a result and the inclusion of most of the Intellivision/Atari 2600 games was pointless, particularly as one of the Atari 2600 titles that you can buy for full price is only a bloody Venetian Blinds demo.

I don't miss not using it, TBH...it could have been so much more but just wasn't.

Agreed, the ideas and vision was there, and one that many shared and was keen to get into, however the execution and implementation went astray somwhere. It wasn't all bad, it had its good points, yet oft times it felt like running with shoe laces tied together.

MS were pretty quick to drop the Games Room when it didn't quite work out, but all they had to do is give it a rework, if they had put more hard work into it to get it where it needed to be, where gamers wanted it to be it could of worked out.
I get the feeling MS dont care much for the indie games section now either, pitty really.

I've got loads of games for Game Room. Loads. Then I became annoyed when it was evident that support wasn't going to increase. Then I became even more annoyed when, having picked up 980 of 1000 achievement points (the only one missing being for playing for 36 hours), I was forced to install an updated which wiped out any indication that I'd ever played any of the games I owned. Everything was reset to zero. I've barely touched it since.

Been plugging away at M.I.A (the green beret sequel) .. I love it.. Racking up some pretty good scores .. im now 127th out of 3000 on the leaderboards.. anyone up for high score challenges (on this or the excellent Jackal)?

I must have played MIA in the past, but I can't remember it. Green Beret is one of my favourites though so I'll probably like MIA. I'll check it out.

I'm not so sure about Jackal. Is that the one where the player controls a jeep? I think I found the controls a bit goofy if that's the one.
