Ultima

Postby theantmeister on Tue Apr 24, 2012 4:33 pm

So I've been playing Final Fantasy on my iPhone for a while now. I'm really enjoying it and so I've decided I need to play more RPGs. Also, I recently discovered TheSpoonyOne's reviews of the Ultima series, which I happen to have picked up during GoG's Christmas sale. So, hey, serendipity, I think I might play some Ultima.

The only question is, which one?

My exposure to the series has been pretty limited. I played Ultima Underworld once back in the 90's for about 5 minutes and got hopelessly lost. I also got Ultima 8 (I think? The one with the pentagram - ooooh) with my Sound Blaster card. It took about 3 hours to install and ran horribly on my lowly 386, so I didn't ever bother playing it. And that's about it.

So, suggestions?

Feel free to turn this into a general Ultima discussion thread...

yes it's 4 (IV) quest of the avatar,i really, really liked this game on the sms but there is a lot of information in it.i needed to make loads of notes on paper to keep track of things.also it was free on GOG recently i have downloaded it but haven't tried it yet,i don't know if it was for a limited time or permanently free.

actually i just checked it's still free :D .

Ultima V is probably a good start, slightly biased as it is the one I have played the most.

Playing Ultima on a console is just plain wrong, to me anyway.

No question, Ultima 7 would be your best choice :)

We are about to do an Ultima Special for PN2. Got a great writer in who is playing through the full series and aims to cover the lot! Possible chance of a certain creator involved but time will tell on that front :D But I think 7 deserves something extra special. Even now going back its boggling the amount of freedom and activity the world has to offer for its time.

I'll certainly be looking out for that - I'm a huge Ultima fan! I take it this would be a quite a long article (page count?) - just clicked on your link - looks interesting, may pick up issue one. Might replay Serpent Isle soon - if only the android version of exult had decent controls :-( Might try and remap them properly to play on my transformer prime.
