Newsstand RG App - Its sh!t

Postby crusto on Sat Apr 14, 2012 12:53 am

Im selling off my RG collection on ebay over the next few weeks/months and am looking to resurrect it digitally once I finally get an iPad. I downloaded an issue yesterday on my ipod touch and I was er well, a bit disappointed tbh. I dont know if this is the best place to post feedback on the app but what the heck.

Firstly, I dont like the way the pages slide along. They should turn properly, as if they are a real mag. It doesnt feel right at all.
Secondly, wtf are those random adverts all about? Whilst reading the last thing I want is to be randomly spammed by some pure censored advert.
And thirdly, sort out the prices please, give discounts for bulk buying.
And judging by the reviews, you need to sort out how it looks on the new iPad.

Sort all that out and I guarantee I will buy every issue.

There is technically a bulk discount, you could buy the 3 archive DVDs. The PDFs on there are easily readable on an iThing, probably better than the still iffy Pixelmags app.

God, I'm an old fart. I love the mags. I probably will get an e reader to carry around, but I like the mag for sitting in the sun on the decking to read...and I like the way the pages turn...Like a real mag!

Same here Kiwimike, its more circumstance than any other reason that im getting rid tbh. If and when I go digital, a digital page flip is the minimum of my requirements . Sliding pages across the screen that get randomly fragmented by diabolical ads is just not good enough.

I would have considered it for _other_ mags (I like to keep my RG all nice and neat) that are offered this way - _IF_ they finally stopped tonguing the charger port of an Ipad and released an Android version... I mean, we _are_ in 2012 aren't we??

This seems to be as good a place as any to put this, my heart is breaking rg it really is. I want to buy your mag as i have for years but now i want it digital.... my problem, i have a tablet, an android one so my only option is pdfs, nothing in the play store for me.

ok, looks like I have to take this back, i just realised your mag is on Zinio, looks like i get to buy it after all. Yay!

Dont think the mags on Newstand are that bad at all, i'm not bothered by the page flipping animation, thats just picky.

Got a few magazines now in Newsstand and its great to have them all in one place and on the go. I've been buying a few of the compilations for RG on Newstand and using iBooks to look at PDF's, works really well. Still have all the paper copies which i read a fair bit as well but when i'm away its just great to have the variety of various books/magazines to read in this little gadget.

Newsstand is an app made by Apple, built into iOS. All Imagine/RG does is provide the content IN THAT FORMAT. The alternative - Zinio - is now there if you want to try it.

In what format? Newsstand is essentially just a container for iOS apps that are magazine/subscription-oriented. There's no defined format, as evidenced by the huge differences between the likes of Tap! (bespoke iPad app), various PDF churn apps, and the likes of Wired, which is primarily composed of rendered images.

I quite like Zinio, it's not tied down to just iOS devices, it's mags can be read on Andriod and PC's. There is an olbigitory DRM though, so you can't make back up copies to PDF files as far as I know.

I like the Apple News stand version of RG too, but digital magazines are more suited to PC screens or Tablet computers than Smartphones IMHO.

What I realy like is the price, £3 is pretty much a bargin.

My mistake, I thought it worked differently.

Yeah the newstand app is the same crap we've had since Imagine took the cheap route of having PixelMags handle it. Several of the problems have been there since the start.

Any mag app that can't do "double tap to size to the column of text" is just daft in 2012.
