I don't agree at all with this trend of saying autofire is cheating - unless it's the extra turbofire of Darius Gaiden.
I understand some of you want to smash your hands and wrists to prove it worth, but not me.
Video games should be fun, and if a shooter doesn't have a methodical/limited firing scheme it deserves to be autofire-enabled. I've had my share of pain and suffering already (Grid Seeker - one that's surprisingly similar to Varth in a lot of ways), and looking back now I honestly feel stupid for not waiting to get a turbo controller first.

Congrats on that score, AMS, I will try to catch up with you over the weekend if my visits allow it. :)

That's it. I've had enough of this one. Cannot now get anywhere near my 'top' score. Rancid.

Slight improvement; the level 4 boss is a freaking nightmare.

Sel Feena - SEL - 408800 - Fixed - MAME

EDIT:

Playing some more, I don't find the lack of Auto to be that big a deal now; just get a good rhythm going with button presses and it's all good. Still sticking with lasers for the lightning bomb, to get out of tight spots (the end bit of Stage 2 is nuts!).

How about that?

Hehe not that this will ever be the case but if it were to happen. What game would you choose Misery?

hmm..... If I were to choose.....

Well, if I were choosing from JUST games that are easily playable via Mame (or other easily-gotten emulators)..... the wacky Cave-Mame probably not counting since I think that emulator is nigh-impossible to find now (I'd have to directly give it, and the roms, to probably everyone, and even then there's usually angry screaming when trying to make it WORK RIGHT), well..... I can think of a few good candidates. I'll pick 10 here for the heck of it:

1. Raystorm, Well designed shmup, good scoring system with a mechanic that's not JUST for score, but also makes a very satisfying and useful attack.

2. Raiden Fighters series, any of these, these are all very, very good.... though Jet's scoring is a little wierd, but still darn good. And you get SO VERY MANY planes to pick from! I honestly cant think of another shmup beyond these that has that many.

3. Armed Formation, I found this one recently. Think R-Type but a bit more..... open, lacking R-Type's extremely cramped situations. Scoring is basic here, but this one's pretty fun.

4. Giga Wing, because it's obligatory that I suggest Giga Wing. Easy enough that anyone can dive in and really enjoy it, but getting a high score is not easy at all. This one got me into the genre.

5. Mars Matrix, I doubt I need to explain too much about this one.

6. Blazing Star, I think this is one of the ones we passed over for something less awesome. I'm still baffled as to why.

7. Omega Fighter, Fun one, simple but very workable scoring system. Get close and blast, I definitely like the idea.

8. Alpha Mission 2, I like this one because there's lots of different ways to approach the various areas of the game, based on which armors you have available to you at the time.

9. Under Defeat, I'm not quite sure what everyone thinks of this one, particularly with it's somewhat unusual controls, but I find it easy to see why this one is so well known.

10. Mega Zone, this one is what would happen if I chose on a day when I was in a bad mood. It's a good game. It's also absolutely rage-inducing.

There, a quick list of some I might have chosen.

You might notice a lack of anything Cave in there.... I like them, but I find their older (and thus easier to emulate) games tend to just be no good at all for scoring. Progear might be the exception..... maybe. Difficulty on that one maybe a bit too high though for something like this. Dangun Feveron might be fun, but I seem to recall it's got a few really nasty exploits. A lack of Psikyo also, cause while I like them as well, their games have bad rank issues, of the "pump more money into the machine because we want more money" sort.

There's others beyond these 10 of course that I might pick, like stuff from the R-Type series, and all sorts of others, but this group comes to mind as probably being the best choices.

....instead, here you're all playing Varth. VARTH. It's got a kersquillion levels (and difficulty curve problems) so Capcom could get you to pump coins in for continues THAT damn many times! Argh. Bloody Capcom, will their foul evil never end?!?

Are you insane?
I hate this game already, it's just awful. Awful design, awful controls and cheap deaths all around. I've been playing it for a month and haven't even reached stage 6.

EDIT: Now I understand why people prefer Rayforce massively over this.

That's quite a nice list misery, though I'd take out raystorm myself and under defeat. Way too frustratingly hard the latter. I've played it a few times since 360 release and have no will to play it again. I'm not really a fan of G-Revs games personally, though I appreciate the releases and them trying to push the genre further.

Omega fighter seemed pretty cool and I love blazing star. Perfect arcade shmup for the neo geo. already been nominated this season but hoping we'll get to play it someday.

Never heard of mega zone..

Edit: oh this reminds me.. For the final game of the season I was thinking of abolishing nominations for that game and taking all the votes for the nominations that didnt get picked from over the season and counting them up. Top 5 most voted for games throughout the season will replace the nominations for that final game. What do people think?

I'm always baffled when anyone doesnt like Raystorm. RayFORCE I have no opinion on, it's bizarrely missing from my Mame archive, so I've not played it.

Under Defeat I can understand just by G-Rev's usual odd style. I dont find it all that difficult though (compared to other shmups, anyway, heh), however I will say the third boss is a turd. First shmup where the BOATS dont irritate me, but something ELSE takes their place. Still, I unexpectedly found myself loving this one (I'd expected it to be a little "meh" based on my usual tastes with these)

Mega Zone is an ooooooooooooold vertical shmup by Konami. Not as old as Scramble or Super Cobra, but it came out a couple years before Gradius/Nemesis ever happened. It's actually a pretty good game, and more arcade-y than most shmups (if that makes sense) as it came out during the Golden Age and follows a few trends that were common back then. It's fun, but it can also be REALLY infuriating. It's available on the 360's game room thing actually. It might be worth a go, if you have free time to give it a try.

I agree with you on Under Defeat, Misery. Such a gorgeous game, and with an unexpected depth to the apparently simple gameplay as well.
Strangely the third boss is the easiest one for me, I always go for the speed kill on him.

Just out of curiosity.... Have you 1CCed Raystorm?
I was playing the US PS1 version but I gave up because it has that stupid difficulty 5 block, so I went to the (much) inferior Saturn version while my PS1 JPN CD is on its way. It is just unplayable on my versions of MAME, always crashes at around the 2nd stage so I can't practice properly on it.

^ Haven't played any of those games, but tempted to give them a try.

Sel Feena - SEL - 534,600 - Stage 4 - Fixed - MAME

The No Pod bonus is making a big difference for me, though Stage 4 boss still gets me.

ooh, I hate that third boss. I dunno just what it is but I'm always gonna screw up there. And here I'd thought the damn boat from stage 2 was gonna be the worst.

As for Raystorm, no, aint 1cced that. It's a long-ish game if I recall, more than 5 stages (I think it's 8?). Definitely one that takes some practice.

Though I was playing the version that appeared on the 360 (really good version actually); I havent messed with the Mame version, so I havent seen this crash.... knowing mame though, it wouldnt surprise me.

I'm fond of this idea. Already have in mind the game I would choose.

About VARTH:
Has anyone noticed that sometimes the extend at 2M doesn't come? :?

It always comes for me :?

Anyway I haven't played this since last week so I'm jjust going to settle for what I've got. I got a score about 100k higher than what I've already posted but I never took a picture.

@kollision - the second extend at 2M is effected depending on the bonus you get for the stage 4 boss. Something to do with killing the boss and receiving 27 or 29k which bugs to make you receive 270 or 290k. I always seem to get the 270k bonus with no real series of structure in the way I attack the boss. Im not sure what effects the extend but I definitely read something about it being linked to stage 4 on the systems11 board.

I always get the 270K bonus at the 4th boss.
Last night I had two lives while reaching 2M and no extend was computed - it had happened before, but I wasn't sure about extend milestones at the time. Might as well practice more to up my 3M score....... :|
