Annoying and constant calls from 0800 numbers to my mobile

Postby ChipTune on Wed Jun 13, 2012 3:18 pm

Over the last week I have been getting phone calls from an 0800 number.. I never answer these as they are never anything good, but this one has been every day, as often as 5 times.. and as late (well for business calls anyway) as 9pm

I have now started answering and immediately putting the phone next to my speaker and playing some ear-bleeding drum & bass or dutch techno at high volume.. and it amazes me how long they stay on the line while this is going on for.. I timed one at 3 minutes of this.. haha maybe some Indian call-centre workers are into their industrial hardcore music!

Is there anyway I can stop this from happening? as amusing as it has now become!

I tried this but it doesn't work with callers outside UK apparently

Yeah, which is how most of these services get around it. So you don't get a full number displayed on your phone to be able to Google it?

Doesn't your telephony provider have a nuisance calls department? I know BT do and they can block calls from specific numbers if needed, but I don't know about mobile providers.

Not much better in my experience. We registered with BT for this and it worked at first but over time, the automated dross and overseas calls crept back in. Currently there's an automated loft insulation 'service' call that keeps getting through.

Do companies pay off the line providers behind the scenes so that they can override the blocks?

Are you talking about the Telephone Preference Service? Registering with that will reduce some business related calls, but they also have a Nuisance Calls dept that handles offensive and inappropriate calls (like the OP getting constant repeat calls over several days). I've used that on occasion for home and work. Its not a wide band filter, its a specifically targetted thing so far more effective.

Yes that's the one - Telephone Preference Service. Fat lot of good it does too. I didn't know there was a separate one for blocking specific numbers.

Can you use it to block charities? My sister recently donated a small amount to Unicef and now they keep calling on her mobile constantly. 15 calls she's had to ignore this week alone. I've donated to charities in the past and I wouldn't mind doing it again but the knowledge that it could very well open up another flood of calls is too off-putting.

I would have thought that too, especially if they aren't withholding their number.

I had a call centre from India calling my land line phone a few weeks ago. On one day, they called seven times! By the last call I was fuming. Luckily, I asked the last caller if he would be good enough to remove me from their calling list, looks like they obliged as they haven't called me since.

I'm registered with the TPS, but they can't stop calls from abroad unfortunately.

If you have an Android or an iPhone, get the app "Mr Number".

As well as having useful statistics like who you've spent most time on the phone to, who you text most, who you haven't been in touch with for ages and so on, it will also intercept messages and phonecalls from any number you like. Adding someone to your blocked list will result in the call being immediately answered and hung up, and texts will be stopped from reaching your message box (silently). You can still retrieve these when you feel like, and even configure the software to send a message back if you wanted to.

I used it when a Private Investigator was trying to find me the other week, found it brilliant. Withheld numbers can't call me anymore, and I retain complete control.

Did I mention it was free? It's free.

You can use it to manage all your calls and messages if you like, but it won't force you to.
