This really p!ssed me off as they are normally great for returns. I asked for the manager but they wouldn't budge. Probably the only reason I still shop there is because of the flexible returns policy.

Did you buy it new? I can see where they're coming from if you did. I mean they can't sell it again as "new" if you've played it, well they could but the next buyer wouldn't appreciate it.
Have managed another week without buying anything!!

It was new and I agree with what you say - its technically not new now, but they have always been flexible with returns in the past, hence why I still shop there.
I'll bear it in mind from now on, and will take less risks with my HMV purchases. I wouldn't have bought the game if I knew I couldn't return it if I didn't like it. Now that HMV has seemingly changed their returns policy I will buy less games from them.
So I see your point, but its a different topic altogether. The problem for me was their change of policy, seemingly overnight, which is contrary to what it says on the receipt, ie games can be returned for an exchange in 21 days in perfect condition (which it was). I'm going to trade it elsewhere anyway. Its not the end of the world.
